We all know that summers in Texas can be pretty punishing, and summer heat is the enemy of your car's tires. Excessive heat buildup means stress on the tire's cords, steel belts, and internal layers, and in extreme cases can lead to tire failure...and you being stuck on the shoulder.
As the name suggests, all-season tires are designed for good performance in a variety of weather conditions. All-season tires feature a soft, pliable sidewall for a forgiving ride and are designed for low noise, good handling, and traction.
They also represent a compromise, however -- the kind of compromise where all-season tires are a jack of all trades but master of none, with adequate performance across that range of weather and road conditions. In the long run, all-season tires aren't as well-suited to the extremes of South Texas heat as you might expect.
Summer tires are designed with a softer tread formulation, which means less heat buildup on hot pavement. More importantly, though, softer rubber means a "stickier" tire that delivers better handling, cornering and steering response. Summer tires are also designed for great traction on rainy days, with a tread pattern that helps channel water away from and behind the tire's footprint. This is important to prevent hydroplaning and a loss of control.
While summer tires may be well suited for hot weather and hot pavement, there's a trade-off involved. Their soft tread compound also means a shortened service life, and summer tires also tend to stiffen up in colder weather. If you ever find yourself in 40-degree temperatures or colder, summer tires are not advisable.
A note of caution: when it comes time to replace your tires, you should never, ever mix different sizes, designs or tread patterns of tires. Doing so will result in unpredictable, "squirrelly" handling and drivability and can be very dangerous. When your tires are worn and in need of replacement, it's best to replace the entire set at once. If that's not possible, replace the tires on the rear axle first, so the rear won't swing out on a corner due to poor traction.
