Don't Fear the Mechanic-Know the Language

Mechanic Terms in TexasAt Pueblo Tire & Service, we don’t want you to be afraid to bring your vehicle in for service.  We are aware that car care and maintenance can involve some complicated terms and require a little knowledge about mechanics and automobiles.  We want you to understand what our mechanics are telling you.

Here is a breakdown of the most common terms mechanics use:

Gaskets- thin pieces of material that lay between two flat engine services to create a seal. A common gasket is a head gasket. This material can last a long time, but eventually, wears out.  Mechanics will often refer to this as a blown gasket.  It is very hard to diagnose without taking the engine apart but a professional can check for visible signs of a coolant leak.

Wheel Alignment- alignments are all about the placement of your wheels and tires in relation to one another and the road.  Think about walking with bowed feet, better yet think about John Wayne.  Your wheels can lean in or out just like your feet.  Over time all vehicles need a wheel alignment. If your vehicle is pulling to one side or the steering wheel is not straight when you are driving a straight line you might be due for a wheel alignment.

Lube- don’t they mean oil change?  Well, lube is short for lubrication, and this can refer to many parts of your vehicle. Lube is an essential part of a cars life.  The engine alone has over 10,000 moving parts that need lubrication in order to operate at peak performance.

Belts and Timing – your vehicle has timing issues.  This means that the belts that move your engine to start are worn or broken.  Without this, your engine isn’t going to respond.

Valves- responsible for how much fuel goes thru the engine. If your engine isn’t starting or is not staying running valves might be the issue.

Knocking- a  sound that usually originates in the engine.  Noise in the engine should always be checked out to avoid ruining your engine. A knock usually occurs when the air/fuel mixture inside a cylinder is incorrect, which makes the fuel burn unevenly.

Lift- allows the mechanic to take a good look under your vehicle, they are much safer and more practical than a car jack.  They do however accomplish the same task, lifting your vehicle into the air.  This is usually the centerpiece of most auto repair and tire shops.

Hopefully, with these helpful definitions, you won’t worry about what’s going on with your car and more focused on what your vehicle needs to stay in top shape. Pueblo Tire & Service in Texas would be proud to set up your next tire or auto repair service with us today!
